Silk Destiny is inspired by the intriguing novel Madame Chrysantheme by Pierre Loti. The book also served as a source for Puccinis opera Madame Butterfly. Written as an impressionistic diary, it describes the affair between a French naval officer and Kiku, a temporary geisha bride in Nagasaki, Japan. Their romantic destiny allows an intimate contemplation of the impossible exoticism and delicate temperament of Japanese culture and dignity.
